Fighting within the trenches of Biscay in 1875 throughout the Third Carlist War, Carmelo Mendiluze, a military sergeant, learns from a young courier named Ilegorri that Manuel Iriguíbel, his neighbor from his native village, has joined their exhausted battalion. anticipating news of his child's birth, Carmelo befriends the inexperienced soldier whose name as associate degree professional aizcolari (competition log cutter) cannot conceal his apprehension and concern of battle. Catalina, frightened of him, desires to flee to America with Ignacio. a detailed childhood friendly relationship develops between Republic of Peru, Catalina and Ignacio's ten-year-old illegitimate son, and his half-sister Cristina; they wander amidst the mountain forest beneath the supervising of their limp and recent granddaddy, Manuel. In the summer of 1936, Republic of Peru has left his family behind, coming to Guipúzcoa, as a journalist coverage on the Spanish warfare. The Mendiluze house is empty.
